Planned rest, proper nutrition and daily meditation are the power tools of super achievement (Part 2)

Planned rest, proper nutrition and daily meditation are the power tools of super achievement (Part 2)

In the article yesterday we explored the necessity of regular rest, proper nutrition and for making time in your day to clear your mind and meditate. The greatest challenge you will face, as you try to introduce these three crucial components into your life, is that you will feel like you are slacking off, when in fact you introducing three new tools that will in fact make you more productive. The first step in this very necessary process is to see the huge productivity benefits that will flow to you as you build time into your schedule to recharge, how building good nutritional choices into your daily planning and scheduling time to unhook and allow your brain to replenish are all crucial components of creating the success you desire. If you are like me and the idea of taking time off feels like you are actually just slacking off, then shift your self-talk away from “taking time off” and see the time you schedule into your day for recovery, meditation and ingesting proper nutrition as “Rejuvenation, productivity building time”. This shift has really helped me to introduce these crucial components into my schedule. I now spend less time working each day, schedule rest time, exercise time, nutrition time and I ensure that I make time to meditate every day. Amazingly, since I have introduced these components into my busy schedule, I am getting far more effective work done each day.  Make this shift away from “I am wasting time” by introducing these apparent time wasters into my schedule to I have a new set of amazing productivity building tools that are making me far more effective and productive and you will astound yourself at how much more you will get done.

The only way to make this work for you is to ensure that you actually schedule all three components into your dairy. As you know “whatever gets scheduled, gets done”. Every Sunday evening, when you are putting your weekly plan together for the week, you need to build the following components into your schedule, time to meet your future and to rest each day. Schedule regular meals throughout the day, make time to exercise and also build in time to meditate. These time slots are penned into your dairy and become unmovable appointments. The trick to make this work for you is to ensure that you defend these appointments on your calendar, like you would an opportunity to appear on the Oprah show. During your appearance on Oprah, you would not take calls, accept interruptions. You must treat these crucial daily meetings the same way, you need to remove yourself completely from the grid and block all other interruptions.

These components are crucial productivity, energy and efficiency building tools. So break your desire to keep these activities secret from everyone around you. You have no reason to feel guilty about taking care of yourself and for doing things every day that are going to make you more effective. Use yourself as an example to everyone around you and show them how introducing these crucial components into your schedule actually make you far more productive. As you set new parameters and expectations around your schedule and you communicate this to everyone around you. It is amazing how the world seems to reorganize itself and everything seems to align with your new schedule.

The final and very crucial component in this process is to measure how you do each day. As you review how you do each day, week and month and see how you are improving and getting more and more done. You will see a pattern emerge that will give you a way to not only monitor your progress, but a way of constantly improving and making this system work better and better for you.

Measure all the rejuvenation components,

·         Are you keeping your commitments to rest and relax every day?

·         Are you exercising a minimum of 3 – 4 times a week?

·         Are you eating proper, nutritional meals 5 times a day?

·         Are you making time to mediate every day?

Commit to make, introducing these crucial components into your schedule, an uncompromised and productive priority each day and you will see you effectiveness and efficiency improve day after day.

This is what I recommend you introduce into your schedule as rejuvenation time

·         40 minutes for meditation

·         40 minutes to exercise, walk, gym – to move my body away from the office.

·         40 Minutes to do activities that engage and relax your mind. Find something that can              challenge and excite you to do.

·         Take one day off a week, 24 hours in which you do not touch anything work related at all. I normally choose a Saturday and from 12 on Saturday until 12 on Sunday I do not think about work or do any work at all.

·         Schedule a 3 day long weekend getaway every 90 days.

·         Take a three week break once a year and travel.

As one of the top business motivational speakers I encourage you to introduce a schedule into your life, where you encourage recovery and rejuvenation, you will see remarkable improvements in your creative capacity, level of focus, efficiency, productivity and efficiency. We are creatures of habit, so the only way to make this work for you is to schedule it into your day and to make this part of your new routines and success habit set.

Planned rest, proper nutrition and daily meditation are the power tools of achievement

Planned rest, proper nutrition and daily meditation are the power tools of super achievement

Even those people that have found what they love to do and have managed to turn their vocation into their vacation must schedule time, to rest and recharge their batteries. Building your level of skill and knowledge, on an on-going basis requires that you stretch yourself and that you push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Just like any athlete that wants to build muscle knows, it is not the exercise itself that builds muscle, it is the rest after the workout that allows the muscle to recover, to strengthen and get better. If you do not give muscle enough time to recover after each training cycle, you will actually be breaking muscle tissue down, making the muscle weaker and tearing muscle tissue. As you over train any muscle, it gradually breaks down and the athlete eventually burns out and becomes weaker. The same is true for the mind and body of any super achiever, as you push yourself, day after day, without allowing enough time to recover and to build, you are gradually breaking yourself down and you are weakening yourself. If you do not include time in your schedule to rest and recover, you will gradually see a decline in your performance and you will eventually burn out. Time off is in fact a crucial part of any hard-core super achievement and productivity regimen.

No athlete or machine can operate at its optimal level of performance, if it does not get the right type and quality of fuel. In the same vein, do not expect to get the maximum amount of energy to carry out your daily activities, if you are feeding your body with junk food or high fat, low nutritional value food every day. For optimal efficiency it is imperative that you fuel your performance with the right type, quality and frequency of nutrition. Give yourself permission to take time out of your schedule to supply quality nutrition to your body regularly through the day. The micro breaks that you will take throughout the day will give you the chance to give your body the right fuel that will give you an energy boost throughout the day. I have found that eating small nutritious meals at least 5 to 6 times a day gives me the best spread of energy throughout the day. Plan and schedule these meals the night before during your daily planning session each evening. The short frequent breaks that you take throughout the day to eat small nutritious meals, allow your mind a chance to recover and keeps your body filled with the proper nutrition, which maintains the chemical balance of your body and maximises your energy levels throughout the day. Keeping your body properly fuelled throughout the day is a great way of ensuring that your mood and attitude are at their best at all times. The more energised you feel, the less overwhelmed you are and you never seem to be expending frantic energy spinning your wheels.

As one of the top motivational speakers in Johannesburg, my talks are based on my personal experience and learning which I share with my audiences.  Learn to find time in your day, to empty your mind and to get in touch with your inner self or ch’i. The Chinese and Indian cultures have understood the importance of meditation for centuries and have practiced the art of emptying the mind and switching off the noise of everything around them every day. This simple art is one of the most powerful ways to recharge your batteries and to maximise your energy levels. The amount of noise that goes on around us all the time, in the form of billboards, radio broadcasts, emails, social media etc. has made the practice of mediation more important than ever. Meditation is the place where we can switch off for a short while and discover the connection between cause and reaction. If you do not allow yourself to switch your mind off and to turn down the volume of all the noise that surrounds us, you will never get a chance to build up a buffer between all the cause that surrounds you and the way you are able to respond to everything in your world. Until you make time to switch off and connect with your inner self, you build up pressure inside yourself like a pressure cooker and eventually as you get to full boil, you explode and you blow your lid. We are all aware of the need to rest, eat properly and to give yourself permission to meditate. In the article I will write tomorrow I will highlight a recipe or daily routine that will allow you to get the best from this process.

People are the lifeblood of your organisation

People are the lifeblood of your organisation

I believe that it is always the simple option that delivers the best results. To this end I think that leaders therefore have only three main functions in any organisation or company.

To set and measure standards of performance by finding keeping the best possible staff that can support the vision you have set for the organisation. All three of these functions are simplified and will be turned into long term sustainable success if you ensure that you fill the organisation with the right calibre of people. It then becomes obvious that becoming a powerful recruiter and retainer of good quality staff is one of the most important roles any great leader must possess. The success or failure of any leader or organisation is dependent on the people within the organisation, thus filling your teams with the right people must be approached with finesse and deep thought.

Look at any recruiting drive as an opportunity to discover people that are an ideal match for any position within your organisation. The best way to start is to first create a very clear picture of what the perfect person for any position would look like. Carefully define their characteristics, skills, knowledge and most importantly what attitude they must have. You can never know if someone is suitable to fill any position unless you have created this crystal clear picture of what you are actually looking for.

You must clearly define the following areas:

·         What outcomes is this new staff member responsible to achieve? What skills, knowledge or specific attributes will they need to achieve these outcomes?

·         What measurement criterion will you apply to consistently measure their performance? They must have a clear vision of what is required of them and they must be able to measure their performance as often as possible to see if they are on track.

·         What is the current culture within the organisation and what attitude and attributes must the new person possess to fit in with the current people.
Event Speakers

The best way to start this process is to first write a very detailed description of the outcomes you want this person to achieve. The more detailed the description of the job requirements, the easier it will be to identify the right person to fill that position. This allows you to get clarity on exactly what you need from this new person and allows you to define how you will measure the performance of the person that will fill that new position. This detailed description is in effect a clear outline or road map for the new person; they will have a clearly defined framework about their job requirements and your expectations. Once you are clear about exactly what this person will need to do, it is wise to then define the type of attributes, knowledge and skill this person must possesses to carry out these tasks every day. This definition must carefully consider the current people within the organisation. The new person must have the right attitude and mind-set, to fit in culturally with all the existing people within the organisation.

It is rather obvious that unless you know exactly what you are looking for in the new person, it will be impossible to find the right person. It is always far easier to invest time into clearly defining what you want from the new person and getting exactly the type of person that you need, than it is trying to retrain and mould the wrong person after you have hired them. When you fill your teams with the right people that possess all the right attributes to meet the needs of the organisation, everything just works and everyone does what they need to do to promote success within the organisation. It is far wiser to recruit the right people in the first place than it is to try to change the wrong person after you have hired them.

When you have a clearly defined picture in your mind about exactly what you are looking for in any new employee you are equipped to start searching for them and when they show up, you will be better equipped to know they are the right person for the job.

Learn from failures

Learn from failures

There are obvious benefits that can be gained, by observing the people around you, which have achieved the type of success you want to achieve. When you observe the actions they take, the places they spend their time, the books they read, the way they talk and how they conduct their lives. You have a set of guidelines that you can use to structure your life, a recipe for creating similar success in your own life. The same is true for the people in your environment who constantly make the same errors in judgement and seem to be trapped on a treadmill of challenge. When you observe their behaviours, you become aware of all the places to avoid, things not to do. In fact you have a perfect blue print for helping you to eliminate all the things from your life that are holding you back and keeping you trapped in the average.

There is a school of thinking that promotes the idea that states, we must only focus on the positive going on around us and that we must avoid even seeing or allowing ourselves to be exposed to any negative in our lives. I think this is a very naive strategy and only gives you half of the picture. I most certainly do not want to go through my life only seeing half of the picture and living an unrealistic life, in which I believe that everything should just be positive and go smoothly.

It is this very unrealistic set of expectations that actually sets people up for massive and unexpected falls. Just as there is no such thing as a one sided, positive magnet, there is also, no such thing as a one sided, positive life. Challenges arise all the time, which test your resolve and make achieving success a bumpy road. I say that when you look around you and you see the cup as both half full and half empty, you allow yourself to have a complete perspective and you have a complete picture of all the possibilities. You get to observe the possible challenges and you have a better perspective and a more complete picture of the entire situation. This gives you more information to help discover and exploit any opportunities and plan for the inevitable challenges that will cross your path.

As the leading motivational speaker in his field, Andrew believes that when you have a balanced perspective and you look at the world from a realistic point of view, where you know your abilities and believe you are capable of achieving a positive outcome, yet you expect, anticipate and plan for obstacles, roadblocks and challenges. You equip yourself to travel a path to long term sustainable success. On the other hand if you try to live an impossible life, where you only see the positive around you and you ignore any talk about negative, you are setting yourself for disappointment and disaster. Believe in yourself and that you can and will succeed at anything, if you apply inspired activity to everything you do. It is just as important to balance your realistic optimism with a balance perspective in which you accept that there is always potential for you to encounter challenges. This balanced and harmonious perspective will give you the tools and inspiration to manage any challenges that may cross your path.

It is for this reason that observing the activities that "Failures" engage in, is a great success tool and one of the ways to accelerate your own success. You can save yourself a whole lot of time and heartache, if you learn all the things to avoid and as such you are able to focus your energy on carrying out activities that will contribute positively to the outcomes you want to achieve.

You become the choices you make

You become the choices you make

Have HUGE EXPECTATIONS about what you want from the rest of your life, have HUGE EXPECTATIONS about what you are going to do with the rest of your life, Have HUGE EXPECTATIONS about what you are going to become in this life and have HUGE EXPECTATIONS about the legacy you are going to leave behind and then go about acquiring and applying the disciplines that are necessary to ensure that you satisfy these EXPECTATIONS.

It is seldom that anyone actually exceeds their own expectations, so if you have small expectations around what can be achieved in your life, you will only enjoy small results in your life. Huge expectations make you stretch yourself and allow you to probe the limits of your potential. As Les Brown says most people do not achieve their full potential not because they aim too high and miss, but rather that they aim too low and hit.

What about you, I believe that you are also most of the way along the path to where you need to need to be in your life. I believe that you do not need to completely reboot your life. That with a few subtle, yet meaningful changes you can completely revolutionize your life and that you will begin to see incredible almost magical changes materialize in your life.

Always remember though that it is as easy to do the needed daily disciplines as it is not to do them. If you are looking for things to change, i.e. you want to make the small meaningful changes that will make a massive difference to the results that you enjoy. Your environment will begin to change when you change. If you want to have more then you must strive to become more.

Do you know how a GPS works? It needs two basic pieces of information, it first triangulates and finds out where you are and then you need to supply it with the information about where you want to go. The GPS then calculates the most efficient route to get you from where you are to where you want to go. Really clever technology, there are some really clever folks out there.

This leads us to the first of the meaningful changes we need to make in our own lives that will start making the real meaningful positive changes we want in our lives. The first thing you need to do is a self-audit where you take a real honest look at yourself and you assess where you are right now. You must be brutally honest with yourself and see what is working and is in line with your HUGE EXPECTATIONS and what is not. You will obviously strive to do more of what is working and eliminate anything that is holding you away from your success from your life.

Once you have a clear picture of where you are in relation to your expectations, you need to create a vision about where you want your life to go. To satisfy your vision you will need to set some realistic, believable and achievable, time defined goals. These goals are the destination you are striving to reach to meet your HUGE EXPECTATIONS.

Once you have done your self-audit and created your vision and goals; you have the information you need to put into your GPS of success. All that is left to do is to build a route for yourself from one point to the other. This route is defined by your projects and action plans.
